Happy birthday to our founding Music Director and Conductor Emeritus Choo Hoey!

Maestro Choo turns an auspicious 88 today. An alumnus of Chinese High, Choo learnt the violin with music pioneer Goh Soon Tioe, studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London, and learnt conducting from Igor Markevitch.

He was Principal Conductor of the Greek National Opera before being invited back to lead Singapore’s first professional western classical orchestra. In his 17-year tenure, he brought the orchestra on nine international tours – across Asia and Europe.

Choo was awarded the Cultural Medallion in 1979, the highest award recognising artistic talent in Singapore. Concertgoers in Singapore last saw the maestro in a 40th anniversary concert this year (Apr 18).

Best wishes from all of us here at the SSO, Maestro!

Have you ever wondered how a composer might have been inspired to write in a particular style? In this carefully curated recital programme, Associate Professor of Piano Albert Tiu explores how Bach and John Field might have influenced Chopin's use of chromaticism and his florid cantilena writing, and in turn, how Chopin might have influenced generations of composers after him - Liszt, Grieg, Faure, Tchaikovsky, Skryabin and Godowsky.

You have heard that learning piano or listening to piano music during your pregnancy makes your baby in the womb smarter. Or you may have come across readings that suggest the fetus can develop to be more appreciative of music, or even acquire a talent for picking up musical instruments. Truth or urban myths? Unable to conceive, I retreated into what could have been a very destructive place but making music was the key change my life needed.

In the window was an electric piano. It piqued my curiosity. The shop’s owner insisted on giving a demonstration, despite my protestations that I was on holiday, hadn’t played in years and had no space.

I taught myself the pieces I thought I had forgotten. The tiny muscles in my fingers were weak at first. Thirty minutes’ practice felt torturous, but I felt the strength return. The desire to improve the sound coming out of my headphones was addictive. Playing the piano consumed the acres of spare time you can have as a reclusive infertile couple, which I felt we had now become. When every month’s unwanted period felt like starting back at square one, the piano allowed me to feel a sense of progress.

I have no natural ability and only play for my own pleasure, but I discovered that finding pleasure was the key to feeling relief.

Finally, at the age of 36, on our second round of IVF, I became pregnant with twins. Forceps and an emergency caesarean later, I found a new all-consuming passion, with two mouths to feed and entertain. My early 30s could have been bleak, but a chance rediscovery of my childhood hobby was the key change I needed.

After months of inquiry, analysis, music theory breakdowns, interviews with those closest to the writer and composer, and listening to the song ourselves and paying attention to how it made us feel inside, we can say with complete confidence that Chris Martin was probably feeling pretty down when he created the melody to ‘Fix You,’ and may have even gotten all choked up.
