Now, the annual twelve-day-long Flower Piano is one of the Bay Area’s most highly anticipated musical events of the summer and celebrates its fifth year at the Garden with a special anniversary edition, featuring new opportunities for the public to play, more performances by professional musicians, special events for families including the new evening-time Flower Piano at Sunset, a community sing-along, free piano lessons, and three evenings of Flower Piano at Night, a special after dark event with food trucks and outdoor bars.

Flower Piano transforms the Garden into the city’s own alfresco concert hall for twelve days, and everyone is invited to play and listen for just the price of regular Garden admission.

Joseph Haydn, a famous composer, was age 77 when he died because he was suffering from an illness for a long time. It happened in Vienna on May 31, 1809.

After his burial, his head was severed and stolen. Two men who were interested in phrenology, bribed the gravedigger to steal his head. Pretty eerie, isn’t it?

When you listen to music, multiple areas of your brain become engaged and active. But when you actually play an instrument, that activity becomes more like a full-body brain workout.

What's going on? Anita Collins explains the fireworks that go off in musicians' brains when they play, and examines some of the long-term positive effects of this mental workout.

Jazz musicians, almost by definition, seek an active dialogue between the impulsive and the rational. For some, the terms of that negotiation become a central feature of their art. Dan Tepfer is one of those: a pianist and composer who sees improvisation as the ideal expression of freedom within a framework.

He's fond of interrogating this process, finding new pathways by way of self-imposed restrictions.

The piano that was burned was my old Behr Brothers grand piano that I used in 3 of my other music videos. It was terribly damaged and had seen it's day. We also broke it pretty bad on my music video for "A Beautiful Storm", and had to retire it.

A lot of people asked me if I was going to turn it into a table piece, or a garden ornament, I said, "No, I think I'm going to set it on fire." I don't really do anything small, do I. :p

So far, he has captured 124 pianos in countries including Spain, Germany and Romania, as well as in remoter places such as the Chernobyl exclusion zone in Ukraine, for his ongoing series Requiem Pour Pianos.

First he looked for pianos via Google Earth, focusing on castles and cultural buildings; now people contact him directly.

The images, which are not staged, show “the power of music and instruments, even in an environment that no longer attracts our attention”, explains Thiery. “This is what I want to do, to remember these forgotten pianos one last time, before time makes them disappear.”

Inventing the piano was the culmination of my life’s work. A keyboard instrument unmatched in dynamic range and nuance of expression, it forever changed the way music was composed, performed, and enjoyed. It filled concert halls with a revolutionary new sound that has enchanted listeners for more than three centuries.

And yet, I only feel bitter regret, knowing that my cherished invention led to that guy from The Godfather getting strangled with piano wire.
