A piano prodigy who made his professional debut at age 12, Peter Serkin seemed destined from childhood to carry on the legacy of his father, Rudolf Serkin, one of the 20th century’s most revered pianists.

But while the elder Serkin was celebrated for breathing new life into Beethoven and other old masters, his son became known for championing the work of 20th-century composers such as Oliver Knussen, Toru Takemitsu, Stefan Wolpe and his childhood friend Peter Lieberson, even as he worked to reveal rich new textures in the classical repertoire so cherished by his father.

Serkin, who has died of pancreatic cancer aged 72, played everything from Bach to Berio and Mozart to Messiaen, sometimes using a 19th-century fortepiano to perform period works.

Derek Paravicini (born 26 July 1979) is a blind English autistic savant and musical prodigy. He resides in London. Paravicini was born extremely prematurely, at 25 weeks, along with a twin sister who did not survive birth. His blindness was caused by an overdosage of oxygen therapy given during his time in a neonatal intensive care unit. This also affected his developing brain, resulting in his severe learning disability.He also has autism.
He has absolute pitch and can play any piece of music after hearing it once.

Casio’s latest digital piano has been made with the sounds of a Bechstein grand in mind. Thankfully, the merging of the makers has worked.

If pop songs can so easily be written and then distributed into an unbreakable cycle of hits, can't they also be reverse engineered and reproduced? Can't a songwriter feed a topic into a machine and have that machine regurgitate a melody and lyrics, forming a pop song that's packaged and ready to go?

Not if you want the song to find an audience, says John Covach, the director of the Institute for Popular Music at the University of Rochester. Pop music has always been more about cultural significance than musical inventiveness. The tunes that become hits today may not have five years ago.

The Beatles, he says, probably wouldn't have had the success they did if they released their music for the first time today.

Yamaha announces ten finalists for its Yamaha Music Foundation of Europe Scholarships

All applicants are under the age of 25 and are currently studying in full time music education in the UK.

The finalists will perform on the Conservatoire’s ‘CFX’ - Yamaha’s flagship concert grand piano to an eminent judging panel.

Founded in 1989, the Yamaha Music Foundation of Europe Scholarship competitions now take place in 32 countries and have endowed over 1000 scholarships totalling more than one million euros since their inception.

A not-for-profit charity, it is dedicated to providing support and performance platforms for the next generation of classical music talent.

The finals are open for all to attend and entry to the event is free.
