The idea was to highlight the instrument through events, lectures, masterclasses, etc. and to involve performers, manufacturers, tuners, and piano lovers around the world. A standard piano has 88 keys so he chose to hold the festival on the 88th day of the year.

The inaugural Piano Day 2015 was on 29th March. It is held on that date every year, save for when there is a leap year. So in 2020, it is on the 28th.

Happy World Piano Day! To celebrate the 88th day of the year, we set our artists a fun challenge to create their own variation of "Twinkle Twinkle", inspired by Mozart's "Ah, vous dirai-je maman". We would like to thank our wonderful artists for their submissions, taken in their own homes.

Artists: Elizabeth Joy Roe, Ola Gjeilo, Lucie Horsch, Isata Kanneh-Mason, and our newest signing Christian Li - on violin!

Unlike a normal concert or sporting fixture, Piano Day can’t just be delayed until later in the year. German composer and What Hi-Fi? favourite Nils Frahm designed the worldwide event to be celebrated on the 88th day of each year, to represent the number of keys on a piano.

And it’s been growing each year. We’ve picked out some of the best Piano Day live streams that are still happening across the weekend, interspersed with some gorgeous piano performances to whet your appetite.

“Why does the world need a Piano Day? For many reasons. But mostly, because it doesn’t hurt to celebrate the piano and everything around it: performers, composers, piano builders, tuners, movers and most important, the listener.” – Nils Frahm

Piano Day, a annual worldwide event founded by a group of likeminded people, takes place on the 88th day of the year – in 2020 it’s the 28th March – because of the number of keys on the instrument being celebrated.

The aim of the day is to create a platform for piano related projects in order to promote the development of musical dimensions and to continue sharing the centuries-old joy of playing piano. Piano Day welcomes all kinds of piano lovers — young and old, amateur and professional, of any musical direction – to join in this years festivities. It is intended to be the most joyful of all holidays!

Beethoven thought he was younger than he was!

For many years, Beethoven believed he was born in 1772, not 1770.

Why?

His father Johann van Beethoven, who was responsible for his piano learning as a child, told others his son was actually two years younger in order to make him seem like more of a child prodigy than he was. Some say it was to draw comparisons to Mozart, who himself was somewhat of a child prodigy.
