As a mark of global solidarity during the Covid-19 outbreak, Singaporean conductor Wong Kah Chun has assembled local and overseas artists to put on a virtual performance of Beethoven's Ode To Joy.

The three-minute music video, aired on The Straits Times YouTube and Facebook channels at 7pm on Thursday (May 7), includes performances by members of music groups such as the Singapore Chinese Orchestra and Dresden Boys Choir (Dresdner Kreuzchor) as well as local freelancers and musicians... See More

Wong, 33, chief conductor of Germany's Nuremberg Symphony, conceived the idea for the project on an overnight flight from Nuremberg to Singapore in March.

Coronavirus lockdowns are no barrier for musicians who want to record together: remotely: as British singer-songwriter John Miles and the Antwerp Philharmonic Orchestra showed with their new release.

Miles sang and played the piano at home in the northeast of England, while the others performed their own sections elsewhere in Europe, following a click track of sound cues to keep time. The tracks were combined in a studio.

The BWV 1052 is one of the finest examples of ritornello form. In it, a repeated section of music, the ritornello (literally “a little thing which returns”) alternates with freer episodes. The ritornello recurs in various keys, often in highly compressed or fragmented form, and its restatement in the home key usually heralds the close of the piece.
