Most workplaces will be closed from next Tuesday (April 7) and all schools will move to full home-based learning a day later, as Singapore puts in place a "circuit breaker" to pre-empt escalating coronavirus infections, said Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

"First, stay at home, as much as possible."

"Second, avoid socialising with others beyond your own household," he said, adding that people should avoid visiting even their extended families who are not staying with them, especially if they are elderly or vulnerable."

"Third, people should go out only to do essential things."

"The spirit of these measures is to get all of us to minimise physical contact," he said. "If we don't go out, if we avoid contact with others, then the virus won't be able to spread. It is as simple as that."

Piano Teachers > Will private tutors who are not based in centres be required to suspend their lessons?

Dr. John Mortensen suggest five ideas for practicing the piano in time of global pandemic.

1. Play easy/intermediate pieces to "close the loop".
2. Record yourself and make a list you're bad at.
3. Go after a technical deficiency.
4. Listen to non-piano music to gain a perspective on what the piano is good at and not so good at.
5. Learn the Art of Partimento

Dear all,

We are still awaiting for an official answer from MOH.
The news came too sudden. MOH hotline unreachable since 830am till now 535pm, with repeated calls every 10mins. Tomorrow we are heading down personally.

It is very unclear as of now, because the reason for all centre-based tuition and enrichment classes to be suspended is to reduce the intermingling of students from different schools.

However,

1) Our student base is 99% working adults. There is no intermingling of students from different schools.

2) At any one time, there are less than 10 people at each level of our school as well. Probably less than 6 on average for the past recent weeks.

3) All lessons are 100% (1to1) No group classes
And of course, we have already been implementing temperature taking, wearing of mask, wiping of all music instruments with alcohol wipes (70% Isopropylalcohol, not wet towels) and using of hand sanitizers.

We will only do exactly what the government wants us to do. As of now, its very vague. We hope to have an official answer from MOH by tomorrow 2359hours 26 March 2020.

How does this potentially affect home-based piano teachers, or piano teachers who travel to students' homes to conduct their lessons?

Some teachers conduct group theory classes or masterclasses. Some full-time teachers travel to as many as 8 students' homes in a day.

Where do we go from here?

At first, she emailed students to assure them she’d be disinfecting piano keys and doorknobs, but many students responded that they couldn’t come because they were too scared. And as the social distancing measures became stricter, she knew she needed a more permanent solution to keep teaching.
