These 4 exercises are fantastic for anyone wanting to improve their speed, dexterity, hand independence, and control.

These are geared towards beginners, but they can be used by any level as a great way to 'wake up' the fingers and develop muscle memory.

Some good thoughts on teaching and some excellent things for educators and lovers of music to hear. Currently out-of-print and unavailable on DVD, I thought I'd make it available for those interested in gaining some insight into music pedagogy and the professional environment.

I am responding to the hundreds of adult musicians that are mad at me for telling them the truth about Perfect Pitch. Unless you are a baby reading this, forget about it!

Sorry, but it's not my fault. It's biology. Only children below the age of 6 can develop Perfect Pitch. This has to do the with brain plasticity of particularly the infant brain and language acquisition.

In this video I explain Circle of Fifths and demonstrate some of its many uses in music composition.

The Circle of Fifths is a visual representation of the relationships between the 12 tones of the chromatic scale. It was invented by the Greek philosopher Pythagoras and is so called as it takes the form of a circle around which each of the 12 tones are laid out. The Circle of Fifths is a visual representation of the relationships between the 12 tones of the chromatic scale. It was invented by the Greek philosopher Pythagoras and is so called as it takes the form of a circle around which each of the 12 tones are laid out. As you move around the circle in a clockwise direction, the next tone you encounter will be a 5th above the tone before it.

The Circle of Fifths lies at the very foundation of western music theory and is therefore extremely useful as you can refer to it to help you find out things like, what key you are in. If you are in a major key it helps you find the relative minor key and visa versa. It tells you which chords are available in which key. It can even help you to transpose your music into a different key and move between keys within a song.

You must be aware that the expression “avoid thumb under” does not mean that the thumb should be still or stiff and never cross the other fingers.

It means that, when playing scales or runs, the thumb should gradually approach its next position and the point is that you MUST NOT PLAY LEGATO between the thumb and 3rd or 4th fingers.

Instead, your hand should make a very little and inaudible jump when changing the horizontal position on the keyboard.
