This one-of-a-kind piano was designed by Gregory Henriquez, architect for TELUS Garden.
The architect drew inspiration from the design of the office building itself. Rather than opting for traditional black, Gregory Henriquez chose a natural wood finish, echoing the dramatic, sculptural glulam beams of the expansive plaza canopy.

The architect drew inspiration from the design of the office building itself. Rather than opting for traditional black, Gregory Henriquez chose a natural wood finish, echoing the dramatic, sculptural glulam beams of the expansive plaza canopy.
The legs supporting the piano mimic the distinctive V-shaped concrete structural supports that are an integral part of the tower’s design. And in a nod to the high-tech features of TELUS Garden office, the inside panel of the lid is mirrored, providing viewers with a clear perspective of the piano’s inside.
This piano is a unique piece, built exclusively for the client and, as such, it cannot be replicated.

Westbank and Fazioli’s latest instrument is the aforementioned Butterfly piano. One of celebrated architect Bing Thom’s last projects was the design of a new development in downtown Vancouver entitled the Butterfly. This is a 56 storey residential property, with a plan view reminiscent of the wings of a butterfly.

This is a 56 storey residential property, with a plan view reminiscent of the wings of a butterfly.
Thom died in 2016, and his design team were tasked with creating a piano to compliment the new building. This is the first piece of work the team produced that didn’t have Thom’s input, and as such is considered a tribute to their famous mentor. The Butterfly Piano’s design matches the vivacious curves and flow of the building. However the piano’s intricate styling was also heavily inspired by Alexander McQueen’s iconic 2003 Shipwreck dress.

Music China is Asia’s main musical instrument trade fair. The exhibition took place last month (October) and attracted around 2,400 exhibitors from 34 countries, and more than 120,000 visitors from 80 different countries.
Two of the more impressive instruments on display were from Fazioli and Bechstein.

For 17 years, Angela Hewitt, one of the world's foremost classical pianists, has been performing recitals and creating acclaimed recordings with a rare concert grand piano.
But their partnership has now ended. This week, she composed a eulogy for her beloved instrument, as full of emotion and longing as the music she once created with it.
Movers had dropped the piano, destroying it.

An extremely rare, $194,000 grand piano was smashed when movers dropped it while taking it out of a recording studio, Canadian virtuoso Angela Hewitt has revealed.
Hewitt, one of the world's leading classical pianists, said in a Facebook post that she had just finished recording Beethoven's piano variations in Berlin when the movers entered the studio control room to tell her they had dropped her handmade Fazioli piano.
