Some teachers conduct group theory classes or masterclasses. Some full-time teachers travel to as many as 8 students' homes in a day.

Where do we go from here?

Each book is authoritatively graded, with techniques introduced progressively throughout. The books are equally valuable for learners working towards a grade exam, between grades, or playing for leisure, building technical skills and confidence. With an elegant and attractive design, and unrivalled range of repertoire, this is an essential collection for piano teachers and learners alike.

Have you ever stared in amusement at how big the piano seemed in comparison to a young child who was playing it? It may be surprising for the common folks to know that the keyboard of a piano actually has a standard measurement. One may then question the absurdity of a one-size-fits-all piano when we know that many other instruments like the violin or guitar are customisable in size to fit the needs of different people.

At this year’s winter NAMM show the Hailun Pianos exhibited one of their HU-1P uprights fitted with a DS6.0 keyboard. What does this mean?

For over 100 years the piano keyboard has had a standardised octave span of just under 6.5 inches (165mm). And this enables an accomplished pianist with “average-sized” hands to play most pieces of piano music. However, we aren’t (obviously) all average.

Together David Steinbuhler and Chris Donison developed two smaller keyboards which conformed to their own new DS (Donison-Steinbuhler) Standard. Initially, they produced 7/8 (DS-7/8) and 15/16 (DS-15/16) sized keyboards. But this nomenclature proved confusing. So these were reclassified as DS5.5® and DS6.0®.

He displayed musical talent at a young age, playing the piano at the age of 6. His parents encouraged him to learn at his own pace and in his own way, without formal music training.
