The Circle of Fifths is a visual representation of the relationships between the 12 tones of the chromatic scale. It was invented by the Greek philosopher Pythagoras and is so called as it takes the form of a circle around which each of the 12 tones are laid out. As you move around the circle in a clockwise direction, the next tone you encounter will be a 5th above the tone before it.

The Circle of Fifths lies at the very foundation of western music theory and is therefore extremely useful as you can refer to it to help you find out things like, what key you are in. If you are in a major key it helps you find the relative minor key and visa versa. It tells you which chords are available in which key. It can even help you to transpose your music into a different key and move between keys within a song.

You must be aware that the expression “avoid thumb under” does not mean that the thumb should be still or stiff and never cross the other fingers.

It means that, when playing scales or runs, the thumb should gradually approach its next position and the point is that you MUST NOT PLAY LEGATO between the thumb and 3rd or 4th fingers.

Instead, your hand should make a very little and inaudible jump when changing the horizontal position on the keyboard.

Mr. Bernstein uses linguistics namely Chomskian Linguistics to provide a framework to illustrate how music and all the arts evolved toward greater and greater levels of ambiguity / expressivity over history until the 20th century crisis.

He manages this impressive feat of popular education, by dividing music into; Phonology (the study of sound); Syntax (the study of structure) and; Semantics (the study of meaning).

this concerto – all its 20 minutes of not-particularly-contrapuntal music – also numbers among Bach’s best works.

The BWV 1052 is one of the finest examples of ritornello form. In it, a repeated section of music, the ritornello (literally “a little thing which returns”) alternates with freer episodes. The ritornello recurs in various keys, often in highly compressed or fragmented form, and its restatement in the home key usually heralds the close of the piece.

Can you tell if this is by Mozart?

Comments from various YouTube users:
- If someone told me this was Chopin I would believe them
- What astounds me is that this piece was written in 1782 and it sounds like early Beethoven! This is piece is 20 years ahead of its time
- I hear Beethoven, Chopin and Cajkovskij in one piece. This is Mozart: the source of three centuries of music.

And in a nod to the high-tech features of TELUS Garden office, the inside panel of the lid is mirrored, providing viewers with a clear perspective of the piano’s inside.

This piano is a unique piece, built exclusively for the client and, as such, it cannot be replicated.

Thom died in 2016, and his design team were tasked with creating a piano to compliment the new building. This is the first piece of work the team produced that didn’t have Thom’s input, and as such is considered a tribute to their famous mentor. The Butterfly Piano’s design matches the vivacious curves and flow of the building. However the piano’s intricate styling was also heavily inspired by Alexander McQueen’s iconic 2003 Shipwreck dress.
