Singaporean Wong Kah Chun was offered a place in Cambridge but decided to study music composition instead, to pursue his childhood dream of being a musician. He went on to become the first Asian to win the prestigious international Gustav Mahler Conducting Competition for young conductors.

Now one of Singapore's most prolific conductors, the 33-year-old is currently leading as the Chief Conductor of the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra in Germany.

Star conductor Zubin Mehta took the stage in Tel Aviv on Sunday (Oct 20) for an emotional final performance as music director of the Israel Philharmonic, retiring after 50 years with the orchestra.

The 83-year-old, who underwent treatment for a cancerous tumour last year and walked with a cane, earned a long standing ovation from the packed house as he said "goodbye to my family," as he put it in an interview beforehand.

The final performance included Liszt's Piano Concerto No. 2 and Mahler's Symphony No. 2, known as Resurrection, at the Mediterranean city's Charles Bronfman Auditorium.

Happy birthday to our founding Music Director and Conductor Emeritus Choo Hoey!

Maestro Choo turns an auspicious 88 today. An alumnus of Chinese High, Choo learnt the violin with music pioneer Goh Soon Tioe, studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London, and learnt conducting from Igor Markevitch.

He was Principal Conductor of the Greek National Opera before being invited back to lead Singapore’s first professional western classical orchestra. In his 17-year tenure, he brought the orchestra on nine international tours – across Asia and Europe.

Choo was awarded the Cultural Medallion in 1979, the highest award recognising artistic talent in Singapore. Concertgoers in Singapore last saw the maestro in a 40th anniversary concert this year (Apr 18).
